My fashion and beauty industry journey

My interest in beauty and fashion has shaped my professional journey, so it’s only natural that my career path has led me to my current role within Luxico. It has given me the perfect platform from to promote the needs and interests of African consumers, and to help them access the quality beauty products and leading fashion brands they need to express their creativity, inner beauty and sense of style.

I can trace my passion for matching products and brands with people to my first paid employment as an adult. Although this was in the fashion sector, it gave me insights into understanding the needs of consumers of all ages, and optimising product selection and availability to not only increase sales, but provide hosiery, sleepwear and baby apparel solutions that helped people look and feel their best.

This step on my career ladder also gave me the practical stock management and ordering skills required to optimise availability and manage cost margins, as well as marketing knowledge that I have been able to apply and hone throughout my subsequent roles.

Sometimes, looks are everything

In as much as fashion and beauty revolve around how people present themselves to the world, visual merchandising are a key step on each consumer’s product interaction journey. They need to be both alluring and informative, aspirational and relatable.

Through creating and maintaining visual merchandising, I was able to see how the psychology of product and clothing displays directly impacted purchase decisions and the relative popularity of products. This part of my role gave me the scope to make changes and see how they played out.

From a retail boutique environment, I next moved into the salon space – again in New York. For me, adding a beauty dimension to my existing fashion experience was a seamless evolution. This was my opportunity to interact very directly with consumers, not just advising on the looks they wanted, but actually helping to create them.

Face-to-face contact with people was just one of the ways that I was able to contribute to the consumer experience before, during and after their visit to the salon. I would count this as one of my key takeaways from this stage of my career.

I had the opportunity to hone my business management skills, and to reinforce the link between the service that each consumer receives, and the commercial success of the business. I also continued to work with stock management and the supply and logistics value chain.

In my role in Luxico, I’m able to draw on all my previous experiences and weave together the different threads that make up the tapestry of my skillset, namely product familiarity, fashion brand awareness, stock management, hands-on beauty therapy and salon treatments, and merchandising and marketing.

This is an exciting opportunity for me, at the forefront of the fashion and beauty sectors in the most exciting market in the world: Africa.
